What’s Stopping me Starting a YouTube Channel?

So, I’ve been thinking about starting a YouTube channel for ages now and I just keep putting it off. Having seen other bloggers I admire taking the plunge, I feel like it is within reach but I’ve had some time to think about what excuses I keep throwing at myself every time I consider it and realised most of them are pretty ridiculous…

Time

Time is limited as it is for me and I wouldn’t want to neglect my blog in favour of posting videos. I know plenty of people do and I wouldn’t have to put too much pressure on myself but this is quite a big obstacle for me at the minute.

Pronunciation

I’m sure some of you will be amused by this one but it is a genuine reason! As a blogger, I don’t have to worry about tricky brand names as I can just make sure I’ve spelt it right. As a YouTuber, there’s more pressure to say it correctly.

Lack of quality equipment

I know not everyone starts out with a fancy camera for recording but I know I personally tend to prefer the high quality, well-edited videos to watch over the lower quality uploads. That reason alone feels like I would be investing a lot of my time and not getting many people watching my videos.

Clumsiness

I see a lot of YouTubers who make being clumsy look adorable, but I’m honestly not sure I could pull that off when I’m dropping my makeup all over the place in the middle of filming. While I’m notΒ thatΒ clumsy in everyday situations, doing makeup in a filming setup is a lot more awkward.

Do I have anything new to offer?

There are thousands of beauty YouTubers who all do it very well and I feel like it would be a struggle to get my content out there if someone else is already doing the same thing. If I felt like YouTube was missing a channel like mine, it would be different but there’s so much amazing content on there already.

Confidence

I’ve seen a fair few YouTubers open up about their struggles with anxiety and other mental health issues and discuss how YouTube has helped them, so I kind of see this one as a positive too as I think it might help me with my personal struggles. But as someone just starting out, I still feel like I lack confidence and would come across incredibly awkwardly on camera.

Those are all my reasons (so far!) What do you think? If you have a YouTube channel, do you have any tips for me? I’m inspired by so many great people on YouTube so I’d love to hear what you think!

  1. I think you should go for it! πŸ˜€ I’m planning on starting one soon, and I’m terrified of the whole pronunciation thing too, it’s definitely my biggest worry! I think the whole confidence thing comes with time, if you watch even the big YouTubers, they started off with low quality and much less confidence than they have now πŸ™‚ let us know when you do start one so I can subscribe! πŸ˜€ xx

      1. I know what you mean, I always think I’m going to be confident, but then I’m super nervous as soon as the camera turns on. I have to be live on YouTube for a work thing and I keep telling myself it’ll be fine, but I’m worried I’ll be nervous on the actual day :/ what kind of videos are you planning on making? xx

      2. Yeah I’ve had to do video related stuff before for work it is scary! I think it will be the kind of content I have on my blog so reviews, hauls, favourites etc. and some makeup looks or tutorials. I’ve thought about doing like affordable cosplay tutorials as well but I think I’ll start with the easy stuff! x

  2. I definitely see where you’re coming from! I started YouTube about 6 months ago, but you don’t need much! I use a little camera in front of my window when its bright out. I use editing software already installed in my laptop and it has been coming out great so far! If after a few months, you love it.. then slowly start to invest in little things to improve! Never be nervous.. take the chance. It could intertwine with your blog! Best of luck, you can do it!
