Halloween Half Mermaid SFX Makeup

I’m a huge mermaid fan but they’re not very Halloween-y, are they? I prefer to make my Haloween looks a bit scarier, so opted for a half mermaid look with facepaint and an SFX wound. Taking my inspiration from here, read on to find out how I created this.

I started off by priming my face before the first SFX step creating the scar. I sketched out where I wanted the split to go with a nude pencil and then took my liquid latex. I rolled up thin pieces of tissue into long sausage shapes and soaked in the latex before placing it along the line I drew. This took about three pieces to complete and then I continued to cover in liquid latex using a cheap cosmetic wedge sponge and small pieces of tissue to fill in any gaps until I was happy with the shape.

Once the scar was complete, I left it to dry and did my eyebrows as normal before covering the scar and the normal side of my face in foundation and powder.

For the mermaid side, I took my face paint and applied carefully with a damp sponge between the edges of the scar up to my hairline, using a brush to build up colour where needed. I set this with a matte blue eyeshadow.

I used a blue liquid eyeshadow on my lid and a glitter liner in the crease before moving onto the mermaid pattern. I hand drew the scales with a black eyeliner around the hairline and temple and then used a dot of pale blue liner to give them some depth. For added sparkle, I mixed some bright blue glitter with the NYX mixing medium and applied this loosely over the scales.

To finish the wound off, I first traced the inside edge with a dark red pencil liner, building this up as I went before adding fake blood with a small detail brush and smudging around the outside of the wound with a sponge to make it look less neat.

With the mermaid side complete, I basically did the rest of my makeup as normal, keeping it quite soft and natural with the Soft Glam palette and a nude lip.

I’m still learning a lot when it comes to SFX makeup so it’s certainly not perfect but I was happy with the results and this is the first look I’ve done like this that I’ve worn out to a Halloween party.
